‘Twas the night before Kindergarten and all through the house
A mother was stirring her margarita on the rocks.
The backpack was checked and the outfit was set,
While images of her newborn danced in her head.
Papa contemplating that it has already been five years…
Mama wondering if her daughter will keep her heirloom earrings in her ears!
Will she be too tired, did she go to bed too late?
What will the mother do if she doesn’t like the kid who wants a playdate!
“Oh Crayons, Oh Markers, Oh Tissues, Oh Sanitizer!”
“Oh Bounty, Oh Glue Sticks, Oh Watercolors, Oh Binder!”
Tomorrow’s the first day of the rest of your life!
Grow up, flourish and remember that if you try hard enough, you can definitely touch the sky.
With a wink of an eye from dad, the mother knew it was time, to finish her margarita and call it a night.
Good luck to all and to all a good night!
I wrote this 7 years ago on my daughter’s first day of pre-school and still re-read it every year. I can’t say it gets easier but the memories sure to get sweeter.
Happy First Day of School, NY and NJ!
